CHOWS

When I started volunteering at the shelter, I had no idea how people perceived this breed. Sadly, I would have to say that they are possibly more misunderstood than Pitbulls. I think a Chow of sound temperament is a wonderful choice for a companion animal. Because they were bred as guard dogs, they tend to be quiet unless there is a real threat to their home or family, they are extremely clean and learn housetraining very quickly. They adapt well to city and apartment living, and are flexible regarding the level of physical activity they require. Known as *aloof*, I prefer to think of them as *non-clingy* and independent! They are incredibly loyal, and the many Chows I have either owned, fostered or befriended have been absolutely non-plussed by young children pulling on their coat and ears, making them a very good choice to consider for a family companion. All in all, I think that Chows have gotten a bad rap - they are a unique and wonderful breed!

Fannie
Fannie is a stunning female Chow who has seen better days. Her owner obviously never considered buying a brush, so her coat had become a series of dense mats.
When Chows come into the shelter in this horrible, neglected condition, I think of how a little TLC and a bath transforms them into head-turning beauties.
I wish more people visiting the shelter could see these dogs' potential.
Luckily, Fannie caught the eye of a kind Chow rescuer in San Mateo, California.
So it was that she became a houseguest of mine for a few days, while awaiting transportation up north, along with two other North Central shelter Chows,
Peluche & Blackie - two sweet boys who'd been dumped there by their owner. (both of whom were adopted by a wonderful man in Northern California!)

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the generous and unwavering support of my friends at
CATTS & DOGGS Pet Supplies in Silver Lake, California. This is a rescue-friendly business in the truest sense.
Countless homeless animals have had a reversal of fortunes thanks to the love and kindness store owners Rania & Virginia
and their staff extend to our community's animals, as well as to their loyal (human) clientele, on a regular basis.
When Virginia learned of the plight of this down-on-her-luck Chow girl, she insisted that I bring her in for a beauty
makeover, free-of-charge.
Both she and C & D groomer, Armando worked on Fannie for 3 long hours,
carefully brushing out the mats, filling up 2 large trashcans with fur... Fannie was a perfect angel through this process.
Everyone was thrilled with the results, and as predicted, customers seeing Fannie for the first time *after*,
were oohing and aahing over this absolutely gorgeous dog.
